Visiting Scholars

Julie Dereymaeker visited our group in April and May 2025. Julie is a PhD researcher at imec-mict-ugent, Ghent University, Belgium. Her research takes a critical approach to examining intimate surveillance in family life and among young people. Julie is interested in the everyday experiences of surveillance, exploring themes of care and responsibilisation, as well as the social construction of monitoring and smart home technologies. David Murakami Wood was our guest from April to May 2013. Wood is currently Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Surveillance Studies and Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada. He has published widely on surveillance from a sociological and geographical perspective and is the editor-in-chief of Surveillance & Society. Click here to read more.  

Francisco R. Klauser visited us from the beginning of April to the end of July 2014. Francisco is a Professor at the Institute of Geography at Université de Neuchâtel and has published widely on political, urban and social geographies as well as surveillance and socio-spatial theory. He is the author of Surveillance and Space (2016) and is currently involved in several research projects on risk, security and surveillance. You can read more about Francisco Klauser here.     

Ann Rudinow Sætnan was our guest from September to October 2016. Ann is professor in Sociology and Political Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and has published extensively within the fields of surveillance studies, gender studies and Science and Technology Studies (STS). William Staples visited our group in June 2017. William is a Professor at The University of Kansas' Department of Sociology and is the director of the Surveillance Studies Research Centre. William is the author of the award-winning book Everyday Surveillance and is an Associate Editor of Surveillance & Society. Click here for further information on Staples' work.
